Goals and Causes

Raise awareness of the
water issues facing the Western U.S.

There are a multitude of water issues facing those who live and/or recreate in the Rocky Mountain region of the American West. As drought years continue and suburbia's expand out across the West we all need to take a look at our own personal water use and collectively as communities.

Water use topics (Who owns, controls and uses this water) will be intertwined with interviews of water users of all types as we descend through the Colorado plateau. From ranchers to rafters. House-boaters to fly fishermen. Navajo natives to L.A. tourists. What does the river mean to you? Maybe we can find a place where all of the different people in the world can agree on how to treat the river.

The current state of the
Green and Colorado River Canyons

We will take a snapshot in time of the current condition of the Green and Colorado rivers corridors along the original route of the 1869 Powell Expedition. This will allow future generations to use our scientific observations, writings, video and photographs as a baseline to study future change.

From a scientific perspective we will document daily our observations of weather, water quality, fauna and flora. Hopefully, in future years this expedition will be looked back upon as the one where they still had to deal with those dam dams and pesky tamarisk.

The fate of
Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell

Our expedition wants to serve as a catalyst for the return of Glen Canyon to it's natural state. As you read this the water levels on Lake Powell continue to drop. (Why do they call this reservoir called a lake?). What is it's fate and what will we discover when we arrive at this section? Through our website and daily writings we will disect the issues facing the rescue of this once drowned, but now resurfacing canyon treasure.
