Howie Wolke
Howie Wolke has been working to restore Glen Canyon since becoming involved with environmental politics over thirty years ago. Howie guides clients on backpacking adventures in the canyon country of Escalante, and throughout the West, with Big Wild Adventures, a company he runs with his wife, Marilyn, that specializes in promoting wilderness.
After leading over 400 wilderness treks nobody knows the wilderness like Howie. He has written two books on wildland conservation, including the Big Outside (co-authored with Dave Foreman), a historic inventory of America's remaining big wilds. His articles and essays have appeared in numerous publications, and he instructs the course "The American Wilderness" at Montana State University, Billings.
In 1998 Howie and Marilyn were part of a 225-mile first descent of the raging Ivindo River in Gabon, Africa to raise awareness to French logging in vast wilderness habitat that is now a National Park. He is also President of the conservation group Wilderness Watch and has a particular affinity for wolves and grizzly bears.
